The rest of the world may be catching on to unconventional lip colors, but if you want to up your lip game to Rihanna levels, lip art is your new go-to. Need inspiration? Here are a few ideas.
Sculpted From Marble
To get the marbled look, apply a loose powder pigment (like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Loose Colour Concentrate in Distortion) to a crumpled piece of cling wrap, then press onto white lips to achieve the marbleized lines. Try dabbing extra lipstick on top of a few of the lines to mute them and give the look dimension.
Embossed With a Kiss
Line lips with a metallic gold liquid eyeliner (like Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in 1), then fill them in with a red lipstick. This one is Julie Hewett lipstick in Femme Noir.
Fade to Black
Cover the bottom lip with a nude lipstick first, then blend on a black-cherry color, like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Pagan a tiny bit at a time to avoid overload.
Ain’t Easy Being Green
This look, which was created using green eyeliner (Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Freak) is open for interpretation. Use makeup remover to clean up any stray marks.
Pombré
Apply a purple liner first (this one’s Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Violet), fading about halfway up the lip with a flat eyeliner brush. Then apply a pink lipstick (like Bite Beauty Cashmere Lip Cream in Moscato) and blend with a brush.
Gilding the Rose
Start with a matte fuchsia lipstick (this is Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in L.U.V.) and adorn the Cupid’s bow with a metallic gold eyeliner (like Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Eldorado).
Oil Slick
Layer a black lipstick (we like Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Midnight) under a clear gloss. This one’s an old favorite: M.A.C. Lipglass in Clear.
Ice Blue
Mix a clear balm and a metallic blue eye shadow (like BareMinerals Eyecolor in Azure) together in a small tin first to get a more even application.
Cloudy Day
Etherealle lipstick in Dandelion is strong enough to stand on its own.
Silver Linings Playbook
Eeyeliner Used for this one (Too Faced Bulletproof 24 Hour Eyeliner in Silver Lining). Most metallics won’t give full opacity in one coat; wait for the first layer to dry before applying a second.
Rimmed the outer edges of her lips with BH Cosmetics Lipstick in Boom, then dabbed Manic Panic lipstick in Bad Boy Blue in the center and blended.
Built to Scale
You’ll need a steady hand for this (plus a navy lipstick, like Anastasia Beverly Hills in Paint, and a gold loose powder, like BareMinerals Eyecolor in True Gold). Then don’t make your model laugh.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Using six eyeliners ( Clinique Quickliner for Lips Intense in Intense Passion, Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Warm Poppy, Burberry Effortless Kohl Eyeliner in Antique Gold, Sephora Collection Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in 05, Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof eyeliner in Sapphire, and Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Bourbon Street), overlap each color slightly to get a smooth, blended effect.
Laced Up
Apply pink lipstick first, then use a piece of lace as a stencil, laying it on top of the lipstick and tapping a loose powder over the lace. The more open the lace, the sharper the outlines will be.
Lichtenstein
Supplies: All you need to get this look are a matte red lipstick a matte white eyeliner, and a matte black eyeliner. Sharpen the outline with a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover.
